![]() Click the box next to “Require a password to open the document” to have users enter a password before they can view your document. Select at which point users are prompted to enter a password. To encrypt everything, including all text, metadata and attachments, click “Encrypt all document contents.” Select which parts of your document Acrobat should encrypt. However, selecting "Acrobat 9.0 and Later" prevents anyone using Acrobat Reader 8.0 and earlier from opening your document, even if the password is known. Available levels include "Acrobat 3 and Later," "Acrobat 6.0 and Later" and "Acrobat 9.0 and Later." The "Acrobat 3 and Later" option provides broadest compatibility, but only offers 40-bit encryption, whereas Acrobat 9.0 and Later provides 256-bit AES encryption. The compatibility level determines which versions of Acrobat Reader will be able to view your document. Select a compatibility level for your document.
